Fashion Revolution Week

By Sydney S.

In remembrance of the 1,138 lives lost in the Rhana plaza factory collapse on April 24, 2013, we invite you to celebrate Fashion Revolution Week by taking a look at your closet and asking yourself “who made my clothing?” This question inspired a new hashtag, in which garment workers post photos of themselves producing the attire we so easily take for granted. While it’s a simple enough exercise, most quickly realize how little they know about the people producing their clothing and the conditions in which they are working.

To learn more about the issues with fast fashion, we highly recommend the following resources:

  • Visit www.fashionrevolution.org to learn more about the movement for transparency in the fashion industry and ethical clothing production
  • Watch The True Cost on Netflix
  • Research your favorite clothing stores to see if they have any sustainability or ethical certifications, such as Fair Trade, Bluesign, or Oexo Tex certification
  • Support local ethical clothing companies like Lev Apparel and Fair Indigo, and shop local stores selling ethical brands such as Hive and Change Boutique
  • Visit www.sustainablesaplings.com for blog posts on conscious consumerism, the best way to fight against unethical garment production practices!
