The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it by Katharine Hayhoe
(17 minutes)
This TED Talk was a defining moment in my sustainability journey. Katharine eloquently demonstrates why climate change is not a political issue but a human issue that affects us all. Her ability to relate climate change impacts to everyone’s background and motivate them to take action is inspiring. She is right; we need to talk about climate change and bring this issue to the forefront of everything we do. Highly Recommended by Ashley V.
A Year Without Buying by Lucia Gonzalez Schuett
(6 minutes)
What a crazy notion…not buy anything but food for a full year. In this day and age that sounds impossible but not only does Lucia make it sound easy but impactful. She demonstrates how we do not derive happiness from things, but from each other. By realizing how little we actually need, we realize there is room for so much more in our lives. Highly Recommended by Ashley V.
The disarming case to act right now on climate change by Greta Thunberg
(12 minutes)
Greta is a personal hero of mine, and she is only 17 years old. She is a Swedish citizen who has done incredible work in bringing the climate crisis to the forefront and demands more action. Greta talks about how alarming it is to see how little effort has been taken to fight the climate crisis, and she demands more from her country and the world. She is an inspiration to all, and she truly wants us to understand the gravity of this situation because that is the only way we will get immediate action. Highly recommended by Ashley V.
Why I must speak out about Climate Change by James Hansen
(18 minutes)
As one of the first scientists to detect how humans were warming our atmosphere, James Hansen has been a pioneer in climate change action. Through his research and outreach, he has tried over and over again to spread the word about the impacts we are having on the planet. Despite climate deniers, being arrested in front of the White House, and continues skepticism, James Hansen has championed our understanding of the climate crisis. Highly recommended by Ashley V.
Why climate change is a threat to human rights by Mary Robinson
(21 minutes)
As former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson understands how imperative it is for countries to adapt to climate change before it is too late. The solutions are at hand now, and governments need to be taking more aggressive action to cut carbon emissions. The climate crisis will unfairly affect the countries who contributed least to the problem, and thus the foundation of human rights is threatened. Recommended by Ashley V.
The link between climate change, health and poverty by Cheryl Holder
(12 minutes)
As a physician, Cheryl Holder has seen the impacts of climate change in her patients. She has seen the heatstroke, cardiac and respiratory illnesses, and the mosquito carrying diseases increase. Not only does she see the health impacts but how these are compounding for low-income and minority patients. Cheryl talks about how health professionals on the front lines, dealing with the effects of climate change, need to speak up to demand more action. Recommended by Ashley V.
